Traditional Chinese Medicine ( TCM, ) includes a range of practices originating in China that has developed over several thousand years. TCM practices include theories, diagnosis and treatments such as herbal medicine, acupuncture and massage.
Traditional Chinese medicine is based on the concept that the body is a network of highly connected systems. When these systems are in balance the body is healthy. The balance of yin and yang is dependent on:
qi ("life force", or "spiritual energy")
blood
jing ("kidney essence" )
the five elements
emotions and shen (the spirit or soul).
There are four types of TCM diagnostic methods:
observation
listening and smelling
questioning the patient's history
touching (the pulse-reading component of the touching examination is one of the most important)
TCM theories derive from many sources including the theory of yin-yang, the Five phases, the human body channel (meridian) system, and Zang fu organ theory.
Dr. Annette Richmond is a certified veterinary acupuncturist. She trained with the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society which teaches Traditional Chinese Medicine. She practices acupuncture, prescribes Chinese Herbs and massage.
